Once I went to a 4th of July party in London, full of Brits pretending to be Americans by dressing head to toe in denim, a few even adorning red bandanas. At first I balked, “why do they think we only wear denim?” Then I looked down and realized I was wearing a faded denim shirt and cut-off jean shorts (with a pair of cowboy boots no less). All became clear as the stereotype proved true. It’s no joke… Americans love denim!
Maybe it’s hardwired into us at birth since denim was originally made famous in the USA in the mid-19th century. Or maybe we love it because it resonates with our stereotypical personalities – easy going yet industrious. Denim is a no-fuss neutral that pairs well with anything. And it lasts for ages, often looking better when it becomes worn and torn. (Although I think the appreciation for ripped jeans is somewhat generational, as my dad is always offering to patch up knee holes and hem frayed edges.)
So as a natural born denim devotee I was overwhelmed with joy when I discovered Madewell’s Surveyor Jumpsuit – an all-in-one denim outfit (and that they now deliver to the UK). Ever so slightly slouchy, it’s as comfortable as it is effortless to style. Paired with different accessories, I can transition my off-duty looks with ease. And while my husband mocks my utilitarian fashion sense, and keeps asking me if I’m going to fix the boiler, paint a house or help out the local construction crew, this Madewell masterpiece remains my favorite weekend uniform.
