Well Healed: My First Yoga Retreat (As A New Mum)

Poundon House Yoga Rreat

Thump… thump… thump!  On the first morning of my first ever yoga retreat, I fell down the stairs. On my way to practice, wearing my coolest fit chick kit from Sweaty Betty and Lululemon, along with a pair of nubby wool socks, I slipped walking down the stairs, landing on my ass, tea cup in hand. Yoga’s Up: Teacher Training

This spring, I went in like a lamb and out like a unicorn.  No I don’t have rainbow coloured hair now.  But rather, I embarked on an intensive yoga teacher training program here in London.*  For over 200 hours, I stretched, flowed, breathed, meditated, read, wrote, taught, loved, laughed, cried, hugged, and of course… “Ommmm”‘d.  And now, I am a fully qualified RYT-200 Yoga Teacher.  Whoopee!  (That’s what unicorns say!) Namaski in Meribel

Each time I ski holiday, I spend a portion of the trip in tears.  I love the majesty of the mountains, the après ski scene, and the abundance of alpine food.  But the truth is… actual skiing scares the crap out of me!  I learned this sport later in life (at age 27) and I only go once a year, so my skills and confidence are, well… still developing.  I don’t have that perfect hip swivel or parallel stance.  Or that fearlessness when facing somewhere steep.  This almost always sends me to a waterworks moment on the mountain.  Yet, I still love the alpine experience.  So each year, I visit a snow-laden Neverland.  However, on this trip to Meribel, instead of looking for thrills, I aimed for peace.  Namely, the ability to namaski.

[HAMPTON BAYS] BEACH SPORT BLUES

headstand

My Style On The Lamb: Hampton Bays Beach, NY

Every summer I venture homeward to one of my favorite coastal haunts – New York’s iconic Hamptons. With its pebbly beaches and shiny blue bay, it’s an idyllic retreat from the city. This year was no exception as I headed to eastern Long Island for a little R&R.

While my primary vacation goal is always relaxing on the beach with a cold beer in hand, it’s never without a little healthy dose of fitness. I don’t feel right if I don’t stretch and move my body, most recently into a series of yogic inversions from headstand to handstand. Turning myself upside down is as inebriating as alcohol, only much better for your belly. It strengthens your core muscles and improves digestion.

However, dressing for inversions is risky business. I want style and comfort, without the fear of a wardrobe malfunction. So this trip I recruited some tried and true beach sport favorites: a navy polka dot bikini top with adjustable ties at the neck and back and a pair of blue patterned athletic shorts with full coverage. Behold east coast prep meets beach sport chic. [Read more…] about [HAMPTON BAYS] BEACH SPORT BLUES

About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
