I am a very annoying eater. Not only am I very fussy about having fresh food, I am also a vegetarian. This is a personal choice that I made four years ago, and while I make no judgements of carnivores, for me a veggie lifestyle works best. Except sometimes when I’m traveling, and it would be so much easier to just eat everything! When dining out I’m often limited to the one “V” option on menus, which is usually a risotto. And while I love a hearty, cheesy rice dish as much as they next person, I also like variety and healthier options.
Recently I travelled to Berlin, Germany, a country famous for its wursts. With this reputation I guessed that I would be eating pretzels for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And while I did eat a lot of pretzels (hey, when in Germany), I also managed to find a great café that serves not only vegetarian dishes, but also some vegan options.
WestBerlin, located near Checkpoint Charlie, serves fresh veggie salads, a soup of the day, various baked goods, and fine coffee with your choice of milk: regular, soy or almond available. And it has a cool media-centric vibe, where you can sit reading, emailing, or blogging for hours.
I didn’t have much time to read or write, but I did eat. There I opted for the vegan lentil curry soup with a side of mayo-free potato salad, as well as a generous sized slice of apple crumb cake and an almond latte. Going green in Germany had never been so good and filling.
