Every English summer, ROYAL is the word, with a lineup of posh events, often centered around the sports of kingsmen. From the ponies at Ascot to the oarsmen on the Thames, athletes race for their trophy cups, while spectators stand by with their Pimm’s cups.
This year, I attended the Henley Royal Regatta, an annual rowing race event, where crews from universities all over the world compete. Unlike Ascot, where hats are an art form (more on that here), regatta fashions are more casual and often in spirit of maritime. Sun hats and visors are popular. As are signature row club striped blazers.

With tickets to the Regatta Enclosure (and bound by no official dress code), I still opted to wear traditional regatta ladies’ attire. Under a clementine double-breasted blazer, I wore a feminine and flowy, pleated dress that hit far below the knees. Paired with my favorite strappy beige wedges (a must for withstanding the grassy sidelines) and a big straw sun hat and sunglasses, I was set for the stands. And with a nod to British heritage, I toted a little Burberry bag all along the stream.
