My Style On The Lamb: Toba, Japan
Ever wondered what to wear to a christening – of a boat – in Japan? This was my latest wardrobe dilemma. Like most people, I’ve often struggled with the conundrum of what to wear. But this paradox took dressing decisions to a whole new level, as I was about to sail through unchartered fashion territory. (Pardon my nautical reference.) Not only was I attending a formal event in Toba, a stunning city on the coast of Japan, but also I was to be the Godmother of the ship and would be highly photographed as an important member of its history. The pressure to dress was on!
Luckily living in London provides many shopping options. There are fine department stores and small boutiques located throughout the city. But when looking for ceremonial shopping inspiration one should look no further than London’s very own royals, more specifically – Kate Middleton. Where does she shop for all her lovely, lady-like attire? Putting aside any custom-made frocks, it’s L.K. Bennett that hangs in her closet. So with that in mind, to the British retailer I went.
It didn’t take long to decide what to buy as the store is filled with beautiful dresses, all with hems that fall below the knee, an important feature for lady-like occasion wear. (Don’t get me wrong I love a short skirt, but there’s a time and place.) I quickly settled on the Kenton dress because of its feminine shape and sleeveless design, another important factor given Toba’s sub-tropical temps. Despite it’s fine structure, it was the beautiful floral pattern – organic, bright with complementary colours, and beaming with an Asian influence – that made me say yes to the dress.
With the dress decided, a few shop girls and I deliberated in the dressing room over what shoes would pair best. I wanted something versatile (so that I could wear it twice) and I wanted something with a low heel (to avoid any embarrassing slips on deck). With their brilliant recommendation for the Minu Patent Leather Court shoes in Marshmallow Pink – the perfect pinky neutral for my skin tone and modest kitten heel – I was set for the seaside.

Being Godmother to a ship was a supreme honour. The christening ceremony exposed a level of humanity to a deal that is largely facilitated because of its economic possibilities. However, a ship is more than just a financial deal. It is the product of a team’s hard work, from its craftsmanship through to its ultimate purpose, to carry goods across oceans, as well as be a home to its crew. Despite my new dress and shoes, it’s this sentiment that made this event a truly special occasion. If I can impart any further wisdom on you for dressing for nautical special events, as the Godmother, it’s… leave the gum and take the clutch. (Chewing makes for unfortunate photos.)
