What is it that makes French style so fine? That je-ne-sais-quo quality that just seems to work so well. Evident in the flip of a hat brim or on a plate of steak frites, the French know how to style up anything.
I once had a French friend describe this as having an “element of surprise.” They experiment with culinary flavours, as tasted in Pierre Hermé‘s macarons. They play with different textures, as seen in Monet’s paintings. They sneak in hidden pops of colour into their wardrobe, with lacy lingerie or in the lining of a bag (note the Louise Vuitton bag’s lining pictured above).
In packing for my weekend away in Paris, I kept the French’s panache for the unexpected in mind. Keeping it practical is always my packing MO, usually opting for black and white layers, with the occasional patterned piece. But just because I’m abroad doesn’t mean I want to leave my sense of fashion (and humour) at home. So I created this ultra layered look to peek ; ) a little interest.
I swapped out a basic white t-shirt, for a quirky ostrich print, letting them peer out from beneath my button-down. And I used chambray as a neutral layer, underneath an off-white striped sweater. Topped off with a long black down coat and woven multicolour paisley scarf, for a little added texture, my layered look was finished à la francais amour.
