This January the big buzzword in fashion is athleisure; the trend of wearing athletic wear anywhere. In other words it’s the “I just came from the gym” look worn to the grocery store, nail salon or coffee shop. Leggings, once considered only appropriate for loungewear, have officially earned themselves the status of pants, becoming a uniform for running errands. And now, they are even appearing at posh bars and restaurants across the globe, making Polyamide Elastane chicer than ever.
I don’t know why this new trend is dominating wardrobes. Perhaps it’s the desire to keep comfortable, especially in today’s chaotic world. It might be an attempt at streamlining clothing choices, making moving to and from daily activities easier than ever. Or maybe like many trends, it stems from the rich and fabulous, who have been walking around in their gym gear for years. AKA, the trickle down theory.
Now, I’m not throwing my jeans away any time soon (I love denim… read more on that here), but this season I am embracing wearing my activewear everywhere – because why not jump on the bandwagon that embraces comfort and style. As a regular gym goer, I have fit kit for yoga and running spilling out of my closet in all sorts of colours and prints. But with this season’s sexy sheer mesh panels and strong colour-blocked planes, I’m wearing my newest Sweaty Betty Urdhva Yoga Leggings to more artful arenas than my local Pilates studio. Paired with a tailored black blazer, a loose-fit embellished tee, and super cool sneakers (more on those here), my “I’m an art aficionado but I also love yoga” look was complete, not to mention comfortable, for hopping through the Serpentine Galleries.
