Art is a way of life in Berlin, from its streets to its cocktails. On my recent trip there, I wanted a fun night out on the town. While the club scene is prevalent, I’m well into my 30s and my raving days ended in the 90s. However, I still enjoy a colorful drink when on holiday.
Zyankali Bar serves up just that – bold inventive cocktails, using obscure alcohols and flavors. The bartenders, in their lab/bar, mix, blend, shake and stir like mad scientists, serving up drinks in beaker glasses with artful ice cubes.
I ordered the Laudanum (which unknown to me then means “opium”), an icy rum-based sugary drink, made with a crème brulee sirup. With its sweet butterscotch aftertaste, this drink is a highly addictive dessert. My husband ordered the very adventurous Death in the Morning, an absinthe-based cocktail that is as strong in flavor as it is color (pictured below). Such stylishly served concoctions made for a perfect PM in Berlin. And an AM survived with just a little bit of aspirin.
