THE LONDON FASHION WEEKEND LOOK

london fashion week ootd

Lights. Camera. Fashion. This past weekend was London Fashion Weekend, the less cool, but still loveable, sister of London Fashion Week.  Located at the posh Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea, this is a biannual four day event designed to allow fashion-loving lay people (like myself) a chance to experience designer catwalk shows, study upcoming trends, and shop fashionable finds in the pop-up marketplace for the mere ticket cost of +£40.   Plus you get a free tote bag.

While I was too slow to snag a front row seat to a “designer” show, I managed to grab a silver (2nd row) ticket to a “trend” catwalk.  Underneath the bright track lights, I watched a mash-up of styles, inspired by LFW, parade down the runway.  First up was Beautiful Botanicals, a slew of pretty florals frocks.  Then Americana took the stage, which was heavy on the denim.  Third to strut was Pop Art Brights, comprised of bold coloured jewel tones.  And last, but not least, New Romance walked in lace, lace and more lace.

Now dressing for any fashion-forward event is always a conundrum, that fills my head with countless clothing questions.  Should I wear my finest dress, despite the fact it’s hard to sit in?  Should I wear those super high heels marked for special occasions only?  Are sequins appropriate before noon?  And then there’s the eternal fashion question… “which coat?”

Given it was a Sunday morning (and it just felt too weird to get all decked at that hour) I opted for Formally Casual – an ironic mix of classic, sporty, and posh pieces.  I chose a white structured, pleated button-down shirt, layered over a merlot-coloured cashmere sweater with black slacks, because monochromes and cashmere are timeless.  And since sneakers are the new stiletto (and are undoubtably more comfortable), I wore a pair of white designer kicks (more on them here).

But it was the accessories that really sprinkled this look with luxe.  To pair with my very warm black down coat, I piled on a grey faux fur scarf, purple leather gloves, a statement bracelet, and my yellow LV bag, from which dangled my new faux fur grey pom pom keychain.

Sometimes it’s the small things that really steal the show.

About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
