Hello Oslo (Hello Baby Bump)

oslo harbour baby bump

There she shows! Looking around Oslo last spring, you could see lots of blue water, boats, fjords, and oh yeah — my baby bump. Last April, I visited the coastal city in search of a chill weekend away from home. Being four months pregnant at the time, I knew my traveling days were changing (along with my figure) so I ventured to Norway to soak up the Scandi life.

While in Oslo I hit all the tourist “ports”. I walked along the habour, stopping for gelato and seaside virgin cocktails. I cruised on an old world boat, seeing the fjords and summer cottages. I toured The Viking Ship Museum, a small but very well curated collection about the country’s early history. I visited the local park, checking out the sculptures. I shopped at a truly cool Scandi boutique (Milla Boutique). And I stayed at The Thief — famous for its fine art and design, as well as its “everything you could ever need” mini bar.

Spending time in Oslo was easy. But navigating the waters of a rapidly changing body wasn’t.  My tummy was starting to punch out of my top. And my trousers were a little too tight for comfort. So here’s how I sailed through fashion during those awkward early pregnancy days.

  • Longer lines. Check out my denim jacket and shoulder-less sweater. Neither are true “maternity wear” but they hung better over my bump then short and square cuts.
  • Less is best. I’ve never been much of a fast fashion fan, but H&M has amazing maternity jeans that fit well, feel good and are CHEAP. I only needed them for a year, so why spend too much dough.
  • Elastic waists. Elastic can be a pregnant girl’s best friend, giving just enough extra room. Both my blue trousers and striped skirt are non-maternity wear that was able to wear easily.
  • Comfortable shoes. Forget the heels. Ballet flats and laceless sneakers are essential.
  • Fit is it. I wore a Fitbit daily to gently remind myself to move, as staying active during my pregnancy kept me feeling good.

WHAT I WORE

Cover // top: Jigsaw / trousers: J.Crew / scarf: Gap / t-shirt: J.Crew
Day 1 // denim jacket and jeans: H&M / t-shirt: All Saints / sneakers: Ash Footwear / sunglasses: Rayban / bag: Banana Republic
Night 1 // shoulder-less sweater: All Saints / flats: Elia B / necklace and bracelet: Monica Vindar
Day 2 // long cardigan: All Saints / top and skirt: J.Crew

WHERE I ATE/DRANK

Due to being pregnant, I had major food aversions and didn’t really enjoy any of my meals (sadly) — so nothing noteworthy to mention. And while I didn’t drink any alcohol, I did have many virgin cocktails. The Thief had a lovely rooftop bar with excellent music and views, which I highly recommend.

About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
