Well Healed: My First Yoga Retreat (As A New Mum)

Poundon House Yoga Rreat

Thump… thump… thump!  On the first morning of my first ever yoga retreat, I fell down the stairs. On my way to practice, wearing my coolest fit chick kit from Sweaty Betty and Lululemon, along with a pair of nubby wool socks, I slipped walking down the stairs, landing on my ass, tea cup in hand. Yoga’s Up: Teacher Training

This spring, I went in like a lamb and out like a unicorn.  No I don’t have rainbow coloured hair now.  But rather, I embarked on an intensive yoga teacher training program here in London.*  For over 200 hours, I stretched, flowed, breathed, meditated, read, wrote, taught, loved, laughed, cried, hugged, and of course… “Ommmm”‘d.  And now, I am a fully qualified RYT-200 Yoga Teacher.  Whoopee!  (That’s what unicorns say!) Namaski in Meribel

Each time I ski holiday, I spend a portion of the trip in tears.  I love the majesty of the mountains, the après ski scene, and the abundance of alpine food.  But the truth is… actual skiing scares the crap out of me!  I learned this sport later in life (at age 27) and I only go once a year, so my skills and confidence are, well… still developing.  I don’t have that perfect hip swivel or parallel stance.  Or that fearlessness when facing somewhere steep.  This almost always sends me to a waterworks moment on the mountain.  Yet, I still love the alpine experience.  So each year, I visit a snow-laden Neverland.  However, on this trip to Meribel, instead of looking for thrills, I aimed for peace.  Namely, the ability to namaski.

[Lake District] Not Your Average Spring Break Style

spring hiking in the lake district

5 hours of driving.  4 Cadbury creme eggs. 3 cups of coffee. 2 bags of candy. 1 can of Pringles…  And we were out of London!  Over the Easter holiday weekend, my husband and I ventured north for some R&R in England’s famed Lake District.  Renown for its plethora of lakes (duh!) and scenic pastoral setting, it is a walker’s paradise with trails through the woods, over hilltops, and around waterfalls – all leading to various pubs and foodie hot spots. [MERIBEL] GEAR, GEAR & MORE GEAR: A BASIC GUIDE TO BUYING SKI KIT

me in my ski helmet

I am super excited about my new helmet!  Is that lame?  For almost 10 years I have been skiing with rental headgear, which is usually uncomfortable and slightly gross.  But finally, on my recent ski trip to Meribel, France, I purchased a new shiny black ski helmet (for 30% off) that’s protective, padded, and full of hi-tech features like air vents and bluetooth. But like any tried and true skier knows, this purchase is just the tip of the ski kit iceberg.   [Read more…] about [MERIBEL] GEAR, GEAR & MORE GEAR: A BASIC GUIDE TO BUYING SKI KIT

[LONDON] CONFESSIONS OF A PILATES ADDICT

pilates and yoga leggings

This January I took my 500th Pilates class!  Hey, we all have our addictions in life, right?  For me it’s clothes, coffee, and Pilates classes.  Collecting clothing has been an obsession of mine since childhood.  Coffee came to me in my 20s and is a habit that I would love/hate to break.  However, Pilates is a more newfound infatuation that I fell into in my 30s, after sensing that my body needed some serious TLC.

About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
