[NEW YORK] A GOLDEN DAY OUT

golden goose sneakers in NYC

One of the best things about the new year is breaking in all your new Christmas goodies.  For months I had been coveting a pair of Golden Goose Deluxe Brand sneakers. This label, founded in 2000 by husband and wife team Alessandro Gallo and Francesca Rinaldo, mixes Italian craftmanship with contemporary street styling. Their “Super Star” sneakers with their signature star emblem are works of art that take inspiration from the couple’s native city of Venice with strong colour palettes and prominent “love-worn” finishes. [LONDON] NEW YEAR BALLS!

disco ball

December is a month full of traditions.  Here are mine.

Each year my husband and I venture home to New York for an annual whirlwind Christmas vacation, visiting our families and friends across the tri-state area, while eating abundant cookies wherever we go. It’s so much fun to catch up with all our loved ones, but also incredibly exhausting.  So post-holiday, we always fly back to London to celebrate the new year in our expat hood.  It’s our time to step back from the Christmas chaos and let a little loose, sometimes solo and sometimes with friends.

This year, we met friends.  We (along with 6 others) spent New Year’s Eve at All Star Lanes in Holborn.  We drank elaborate cocktails, dined on eclectic comfort food, bowled a few rounds down a blue-lit alleyway, and danced the night away in a red velvet disco lounge.  It was a blast! [LONDON] MERRY CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AT LIBERTY

Liberty London

As a kid I used to dream about what Santa’s workshop would look like, picturing a remote, snow laden landscape, buzzing with elves crafting toys, while Santa would sit on a gingerbread throne eating cookies in prep for his big night. (Thus the brilliance of the movie Elf.) Now, as a grown woman I envision the making of Christmas to happen in the fashion of an elegant old English department store, with dark, wooden tudor-style beams, 4-story crystal chandeliers, and mannequins wearing fashion-forward gowns and golden crowns.  In a word, I imagine Liberty. [LONDON] DOLCE & VANILLA

Tea at The Berkeley

One of the best thing about living in London is playing tourist. So this November, in traditional English fashion, I went for afternoon tea at The Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge. And just like London, it was lovely.

With Christmas around the corner, the hotel foyer resembled a winter wonderland, straight out of a fairytale, with a giant white birch tree, adorned with baubles and birds, framing a lit fireplace surrounded by little woodland creatures and burning candles. [LONDON] DATE NIGHT

night at the movies

There are many theories on what makes a happy marriage. Communication. Compromise. His and her bathrooms.  While all those are valid, for me it’s date night.  All week long we work hard.  We go to our respective offices, attend meetings, write reports, and present them to our bosses.  Then we manage life, run errands, clean the house, pay taxes.  All this, mixed with trips to the gym and sleep for the weary.  That’s why I think spending time together, doing something fun (ideally out of the home) is so good for relationships.  It restores balance to our busy lives and reverts us back to those early days of courtship when all was exciting and fresh.

So this past weekend my husband and I went on a date to the movies at the iconic Electric Cinema in Notting Hill.  And just like old times, I planned my look accordingly.  I wanted a outfit that was cute, but comfortable.  So I opted for a classic J.Crew tweed blazer because girls with boyish flair always look cooler than sh*t and there’s nothing sexier than houndstooth and elbow patches, right?  Worn over a lightweight t-shirt with a seasonal scarf, skinny jeans and black suede heeled boots, my style suited the cinema and an affair to remember. [LONDON] WEEKEND UNIFORM

me in my denim jumpsuit

Once I went to a 4th of July party in London, full of Brits pretending to be Americans by dressing head to toe in denim, a few even adorning red bandanas. At first I balked, “why do they think we only wear denim?” Then I looked down and realized I was wearing a faded denim shirt and cut-off jean shorts (with a pair of cowboy boots no less). All became clear as the stereotype proved true. It’s no joke… Americans love denim!

Maybe it’s hardwired into us at birth since denim was originally made famous in the USA in the mid-19th century. Or maybe we love it because it resonates with our stereotypical personalities – easy going yet industrious. Denim is a no-fuss neutral that pairs well with anything. And it lasts for ages, often looking better when it becomes worn and torn. (Although I think the appreciation for ripped jeans is somewhat generational, as my dad is always offering to patch up knee holes and hem frayed edges.)

So as a natural born denim devotee I was overwhelmed with joy when I discovered Madewell’s Surveyor Jumpsuit – an all-in-one denim outfit (and that they now deliver to the UK). Ever so slightly slouchy, it’s as comfortable as it is effortless to style. Paired with different accessories, I can transition my off-duty looks with ease.  And while my husband mocks my utilitarian fashion sense, and keeps asking me if I’m going to fix the boiler, paint a house or help out the local construction crew, this Madewell masterpiece remains my favorite weekend uniform. About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
