[NEW YORK ] SOUL IN THE CITY

SoulCycle

As a fitness enthusiast, I’m often talking about health and wellness trends from the latest smoothie concoction to the hottest studio on the block. And with every fit tip conversation had, there is always a passing moment of adoration for SoulCycle – the beloved NYC-born spin studio, famed for its music and mantras.

SoulCycle’s patrons’ love runs deep, earning them a cult-like reputation. Heavily branded in the studio’s bike wheel logoed gear (with the occasional skull and bones graphic – perhaps an ironic note to Americana’s secret societies), they consistently praise the studio as the best sweat session in town.

This summer I ventured to NYC. And having never been to SoulCycle before, I decided it was time to hit the saddle.

[JAPAN] HOW TO DRESS AS GODMOTHER OF A SHIP

IMG_0028

My Style On The Lamb: Toba, Japan

Ever wondered what to wear to a christening – of a boat – in Japan? This was my latest wardrobe dilemma. Like most people, I’ve often struggled with the conundrum of what to wear. But this paradox took dressing decisions to a whole new level, as I was about to sail through unchartered fashion territory. (Pardon my nautical reference.) Not only was I attending a formal event in Toba, a stunning city on the coast of Japan, but also I was to be the Godmother of the ship and would be highly photographed as an important member of its history. The pressure to dress was on!

Luckily living in London provides many shopping options. There are fine department stores and small boutiques located throughout the city. But when looking for ceremonial shopping inspiration one should look no further than London’s very own royals, more specifically – Kate Middleton. Where does she shop for all her lovely, lady-like attire? Putting aside any custom-made frocks, it’s L.K. Bennett that hangs in her closet. So with that in mind, to the British retailer I went.

It didn’t take long to decide what to buy as the store is filled with beautiful dresses, all with hems that fall below the knee, an important feature for lady-like occasion wear. (Don’t get me wrong I love a short skirt, but there’s a time and place.) I quickly settled on the Kenton dress because of its feminine shape and sleeveless design, another important factor given Toba’s sub-tropical temps.  Despite it’s fine structure, it was the beautiful floral pattern – organic, bright with complementary colours, and beaming with an Asian influence – that made me say yes to the dress.

With the dress decided, a few shop girls and I deliberated in the dressing room over what shoes would pair best.  I wanted something versatile (so that I could wear it twice) and I wanted something with a low heel (to avoid any embarrassing slips on deck).  With their brilliant recommendation for the Minu Patent Leather Court shoes in Marshmallow Pink – the perfect pinky neutral for my skin tone and modest kitten heel – I was set for the seaside. [JAPAN] A GUIDE TO TOKYO & KYOTO

Last month I visited Japan for my summer holiday. I spent my time touring around Tokyo and Kyoto – two amazing cities with lots to offer a tourist on the lamb. Here’s a list of my favourite spots for sleeping, eating, drinking, etc.  Enjoy!

Xx, Jenn

[JAPAN] LAND OF RISING STYLE

IMG_3681

Clockwise: Tokyo’s Shibuya, Kyoto’s Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine, a fond farewell from the Matsui Haonkan Ryokan in Kyoto, me as Tokyo tourist, view of Toba, Tokyo’s Imperial Gardens

Last month I spent my summer holiday in Japan, land of the rising sun. A very suitable nickname given its radiating heat. I moved about from the metropolises of Tokyo and Kyoto to the coastal town of Toba, finding 100 degree temperatures in each. City touring was a challenge and often left me feeling like I came back from a spin class, drenched head to toe in sweat. But thankfully the Japanese love ice cream, and it’s available everywhere! From green tea to black sesame, I indulged in some of the best ice cream flavours all week long, with the pinnacle iced dessert being tempura-battered vanilla ice cream. A classic dish met with quirky creativity – this embodies the Japanese style.

[LISBON] IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN…

Lisbon collage

Clockwise: sangria at Sky Bar, trolly, pasteis de nada at Pastéis de Belém, me in Praça do Comércio, sunlight street, lobster at Cervejaria Ramiro

Lisbon is a city that can only be described as yellow, from the bright sun beaming down on to the cobble stone streets to the vibrantly painted buildings lining the squares. Golden old-world trollies, now painted with graffiti, climb the city’s steep hills, through narrow passageways, all the way to an 11th century stone castle.

Even the food and drinks are shades of marigold. Sangria pitchers are filled with ripe lemons and mint leaves. Rock lobsters are served fresh with generously buttered bread. And the traditional Portuguese desserts, pasteis de nata, are highly scouted for their warm custard filling and buttery crust.   [Read more…] about [LISBON] IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN…

In Like A Lamb: back to the blog

IMG_1495

Over the past year, couples of people, several even, have been asking, “Why don’t you blog anymore?” I used to have lots of excuses as to why – graduate school; new job; Netflix. Suddenly now life seems more settled for me than it did years ago and I have more to share than ever before. So here I am giving blogging another go, this time on a new and shiny site, Style On The Lamb. My objective with this blog is to simply share stories about my favorite things in life, with just a sprinkling of satire.

Fashion plays a huge role in my life. Not just because I get dressed everyday and because I work fulltime in retail marketing, but because I really truly enjoy it! I love buying clothes and accessories. And I love using all my purchased goods as an expression of my mood and personal style. From morning park strolls to fitness sweat sessions, I embrace the OOTD.

Travel is also a big part of my life. I’m an American expat living in London with a severe case of wanderlust. If there was a fire in my house, the first thing I would grab is my passport. I relish in flipping though it’s pages and deciphering all the stamps. Exploring the world is very important to me as it always brings about new perspectives. As well as new opportunities for me to go shopping! (And eating! And who doesn’t love awesome food. But I promise you, I will not post pictures of my morning oatmeal because that’s boring and looks disgusting.)

Ultimately, Style On The Lamb is a lifestyle blog about style in transit. It celebrates fashion in motion, from my local neighbourhood to exotic cities abroad, and occasionally at an airport in between. In tandem, it embraces the absurdity of trends, from crazy patterned yoga leggings to British fascinators to excessively large black sunglasses. Because while classic clothing choices are great, so is dressing slightly off-center.

So if you like clothes and travel, with a little tongue-in-cheek humor, then sign up for emails to stay up-to-date with me and my musings. Or follow me on Instagram @jvogelmeer if you’re not really into reading and would rather just look at pictures… I get that.

Next stop: Lisbon, Portugal.

About

I'm an American writer/mother/boss living in London, sharing stories and articles about the things I love most – fashion, travel, and wellness; all told with a little tongue-in-cheek humour, because I also love satire, sarcasm, idiosyncrasies and double entendres.

All opinions are my own. All photos are taken by me (or my begrudging art directed husband, a specially recruited friend, or maybe my mom).
